Chapter 1: A Road Trip to God's Will

road trip

BIRDIE –
Some people think finding God’s will is like reading a horoscope. “This is your day!” “Love is in the air.” “A storm is in your future.”

REBECCA –
Close your eyes. Open your Bible. Drop your finger on a passage and that is your lot in life. I did that once when I was a kid and landed on “Man of Sorrows.” That was my last attempt at biblical fortune-telling and could be the reason why I was reluctant to marry!

BIRDIE –
Finding God’s will for your life doesn’t require a theology degree. In fact, if you’ve ever taken a road trip, you already know how to find God’s will.

REBECCA –
Years ago, when we were in Kentucky, a bunch of us friends took an annual ski trip to Colorado. Oddly enough, this road trip, not seminary, taught me how to walk in God’s will.

BIRDIE –
From Kentucky to Colorado was a looooong drive.

REBECCA –
But, think about it, we get to Colorado the same way we get to the corner coffee shop.
...Say what?

BIRDIE –
POINT 1:
We started by walking out the door, on the street where we lived.
And twenty-four hours later, we were in Aspen, Colorado!

REBECCA –
What we DIDN’T do was get in the van and – BAM!! – we were there.

BIRDIE –
...Although I wished that, many-a time.

REBECCA –
To find God’s will, start where you live! Don’t wait for circumstances to change, problems to get solved, more time, or the children to grow up. Your schedule will never free up if that’s all it takes to keep you out of the center of God’s will!

BIRDIE –
POINT 2:
On route to Colorado, we took each turn as it came up.
If we took a wrong turn, we turned around quickly and went back to the last place where we knew we were right!

broken down vanWe didn't have perfect conditions, but we stayed on the road...and we got there!

REBECCA –
So many people try to take a road before they get to it. They have a hint of how God might be leading so they hit the accelerator and take the first road available.

BIRDIE –
Abraham had a preview of his destiny. “Count the stars,” God said to the childless father. “Your descendants will be more than them.”
What did Abraham and Sarah do? They hit the accelerator and came up with a plan to MAKE God’s will happen.

REBECCA –
What...a... mess! They tried to take a road that they hadn’t gotten to.

BIRDIE –
Make correct choices TODAY. Then you WILL end up where God wants you TOMORROW.

REBECCA –
POINT 3:
We trusted the map.

BIRDIE –
After leaving Egypt, the Children of Israel wandered in the wilderness for forty years - a trip that should have taken about fifty days! Why?

REBECCA –
Because they doubted, questioned and complained the whole way.

BIRDIE –
On route to Colorado, we didn’t say, “This town is too little to pass through.” Or, “This looks like an insignificant turn. Let’s skip it.”

REBECCA –
That wasn’t an option. We trusted that the Maker of the Map was RIGHT.

tired friendsWe were tired, but we made it!

BIRDIE –
Only God knows how significant each turn in your life is. People think fame, achievement, big numbers, popularity, winning trophies – those are significant. Not so, in God’s eyes.

REBECCA –
Something you did years ago, something so small to you that you may not even remember, might be the most important thing you will ever do.

BIRDIE –
Luke 21:1-4 tells the story of a poor widow who stood in a line with the wealthy. All were dropping their offerings into the temple treasury.

REBECCA –
But this day, Jesus was watching.

BIRDIE –
Her piddling two copper coins barely made a sound as they fell into the urn, in comparison to the offering of others.

REBECCA –
She thought she was doing the “small stuff.”

BIRDIE –
No trumpets sounded.
No fanfare played.

REBECCA –
But it was her right time. Her right place. Her right thing to do that day.

BIRDIE –
Her life’s most significant calling was in that ONE MOMENT!
The moment when Jesus used HER as a selfless example; an example that will be modeled, preached and expounded upon as long as the Bible is in print.

REBECCA –
We have a friend who is thin, always has been. Since my life is a perpetual diet I asked for her secret.
She said: “Every day I step onto the scales. If I am up a pound, I cut back. If I am down a pound, I eat cake.”

BIRDIE –
God’s will is a daily process. His Word is our map.

REBECCA –
You can’t walk out the door in Kentucky and step into Colorado. But Isaiah 30:21 says, “Whether you turn to the right or the left, you will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’”

BIRDIE –
My friend ... that’ll preach!

Let's be honest (Applying Truth to Real Life)

1. What excuses keep you from doing God’s will?

2. If you feel “out” of God’s will, when was the last time you felt “in” God’s will?

3. What causes you to feel “out” of God’s will? (Be specific.)

4. In what ways have you tried to accelerate or force God’s will?

5. In what ways do you doubt, question, complain or blame God for your life circumstances?

6. In what ways have your unpleasant circumstances been triggered by incorrect decisions made by you or someone who affects you?

7. Name specific things you KNOW to do today, which are God’s will.

Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the plans I have for you. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

First let me say that you're lucky. I made my drive to Colorado from Virginia – twice! Ha ha! I did enjoy reading this blog. I've had some changes in my path lately and I'm thankful for the reminder to stop and wait for God's will rather than focusing on what the majority of this world says is important today and forcing one I'm not supposed to be on. Waiting doesn't come easy for me so He has to point me to reminders like yours. Thanks for putting it out there for me & others like me.
